California wildfire home readiness: where to start
Wildfire preparation combines a family evacuation plan, a well-maintained exterior, and awareness of local conditions. No single product or action can guarantee that a home will survive a wildfire.
1. Check the first five feet
CAL FIRE calls the area within five feet of structures Zone 0, the ember-resistant zone. Clear dead leaves and debris from this area, roofs, and gutters. Consider noncombustible surfaces such as gravel or pavers near the home and review what is stored on and under decks.

2. Look for places embers can enter
Inspect vents, roof edges, gutters and other openings. CAL FIRE recommends considering ember- and flame-resistant vents and keeping combustible material away from the home. Consult a qualified professional and your local fire authority about your property and applicable requirements.

3. Make a plan for your household
Prepare a go bag, identify evacuation routes, and sign up for official local emergency alerts. Follow local authorities and evacuate when ordered. Call 911 in an emergency.

4. Explore additional exterior readiness
Protecting Vision is developing FireCurtains, an exterior water-based wildfire defense system. A property fit conversation can help you consider site conditions and water supply. It is a supplementary layer, not a substitute for home hardening, official warnings, or evacuation.
